Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

During the so-called "boom" of latin American Literature, authors like Borges and Bioy Casares were often seen as "not enough Latin American" and too intellectual. Around 2000, thse two authors, together with Julio Cortázar (who also sees himself as follower and admirer of Borges suddenly became a kind of model for the new generation of Latin Amercan authors (e.g. McOndo, Crack, etc.). This is most obvious in the literary work of Roberto Bolaño who hie himself became a kind of idealized model for the young generation after his death in 2003. In the course we shall try to understand the reasons and the background of this development and ask the question if and to which extent these four authors may serve as models for the further development of Latin American literature in the XXIst century

Written exam at the end of January 2015

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Transmitting detailed informations about Latin American Literatures during the second half of the 20th and the first years of the 21st century, capacities of critical reading and interpretation of recent literary production

Examination topics

Presentation of texts, analysis and discussion
