Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The learning objective of the seminar is to provide students with a profound understanding of the endangered cultural heritage of Romanians, Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians, and Istro-Romanians. The course aims to enable students to analyze and safeguard the historical, cultural, and linguistic peculiarities of these ethnic groups. The following contents will be covered in the course:
Historical Context: Students will learn about the historical evolution of these ethnicities and their communities in the region.
Cultural Diversity: Different cultural expressions, customs, traditions, festivals, and culinary specialities of these groups will be explored.
Linguistic Aspects: The various languages and dialects of these ethnicities will be examined to understand and preserve linguistic diversity.
Architectural Heritage: Traditional architecture and building techniques of the region, including churches, houses, and village layouts, will be discussed.
Artisan Crafts: Students will gain insights into traditional crafts such as textiles, ceramics, and wood carving.
Cultural Interactions: Historical interactions and cultural exchanges with neighboring communities will be illuminated.
Heritage Endangerment: The threats facing this heritage, such as urbanization, tourism, and globalization, will be analyzed.
Protection and Preservation: Strategies for safeguarding and preserving this heritage will be discussed, including UNESCO initiatives and local measures.
Identity Concerns: The relationship between cultural heritage and identity in a changing world will be critically examined.
Research Methods: Students will learn ethnographic research and documentation methods to contribute independently to the preservation of this heritage.
By the end of the seminar, students should not only appreciate the cultural heritage of endangered Balkan Romance ethnicities but also be capable of taking conscious steps towards its preservation and raising awareness about its vulnerability.

Assessment and permitted materials

For the exam/course, students must present a comprehensive analysis of the threatened cultural heritage of the named ethnic groups, covering historical, cultural, and linguistic aspects. To do this, they should be able to create their own language documentation and text transcriptions, identify threats, and propose protection strategies. Research notes, literary sources, and personal notes are allowed as aids in the homework assignment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A positive assessment requires a thorough examination of the historical, cultural, and linguistic aspects of the threatened cultural heritage of the named ethnic groups. Students should demonstrate clear insights into the threats and protective measures and structure their argument well. Sub-credits and individual questions will be evaluated on the basis of depth of analysis, originality of perspectives, and ability to reflect critically. Grades will reflect the quality of presentation, argument structure, and use of relevant sources.

Examination topics

The following must be learned/provided for the exam/partial credit:
Understanding of the history of the ethnic groups mentioned.
Knowledge of customs, traditions, architecture and handicrafts.
Overview of languages and dialects.
Recognition of threats to cultural heritage.
Suggestions for preservation of heritage.
Use of ethnographic approaches.
Reflection on identity and global influences.
A homework assignment with transcription and documentation that addresses these aspects is sufficient.
