Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is a continuation of Portuguese 1. Students will continue to study and deepen their knowledge of European Portuguese grammar and syntax, as well as some socio-cultural aspects of Portuguese-speaking countries.

The course material will be provided in class and via Moodle by the teacher, and will include theoretical presentations, practical grammar exercises, and oral and written comprehension exercises.

Handouts with texts and information on basic aspects of grammar (available in class / via Moodle).

Class syllabus:
- review of subjunctives covered in the previous semester
- subjunctive vs. personal infinitive
- past tense subjunctive
- past perfect tense subjunctive
- compound future tense subjunctive
- pretérito mais-que-perfeito composto
- conditional sentences
- prepositions and prepositional phrases
- idioms in European Portuguese
- plural of compound nouns
- topics: social, political and cultural situation in Portugal (comparison with Austria and/or places of origin), environmental protection, causes and consequences of emigration and immigration, ageing of the European population, new technologies.

Assessment and permitted materials

The student knows the subjunctive of all verb tenses, can replace the subjunctive with the personal infinitive, has a wide vocabulary in the area of the social, political and cultural situation in Portugal and in other Lusophone countries, has a high level of written and oral expression.

In terms of performance, students must successfully complete a final written examination (70%) and an oral examination (30%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The student receives 30% of the total grade on a continuous basis based on presence and active class participation; 70% of the grade is the final written exam.

The final assessment of the course is based on the following scale:

1 Sehr gut (Excellent): 18–20 points. Excellent performance, complete mastery of the subject matter.
2 Gut (Good): 15–17 points. Good performance, solid mastery of the subject matter.
3 Befriedigend (Satisfactory): 12–14 points. Average performance, acceptable mastery of the subject matter.
4 Genügend (Sufficient): 10–11 points. Minimum performance and mastery of the subject matter required for a pass.
5 Nicht genügend (Insufficient): 0–9 points. Did not reach the minimum required level. Fail.

At the end of the semester, it is expected that the student will have acquired knowledge corresponding to the B1/B2 threshold level of the CEFR.

Examination topics

The student must demonstrate mastery of the following structural topics:

- present subjunctive vs. personal infinitive;
- past subjunctive (cases of use);

- Compound tenses:
past perfect subjunctive;
compound past subjunctive;
future compound subjunctive;
- past perfect compound;

- prepositions and prepositional phrases;
- idiomatic expressions in European Portuguese;
- plural of compound nouns.

Reading list

The content will be presented and worked on in class under the guidance of the teacher. Subsequently, the documents in question will be made available to students in their entirety via the Moodle platform.
