Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Continuous assessment: preparation and regular attendance (maximum three absences during the semester - medical certificate required if absent from an exam!) and active participation in lessons, one short compulsory oral presentation, ungraded written assignments. All work is taken into account for the overall mark.
2 written exam sessions (one in the middle of the semester, one at the end of the semester), an oral exam at the end of the semester.
Partial written examinations include a grammar test and a narrative test.
The final written exams include a grammar test, a position paper and a narrative text.
The oral mark includes an oral comprehension test, an oral presentation, a final oral examination and active participation in the course.
A unilingual paper dictionary may be used for the written production tests, but not for the oral comprehension test or the grammar exercises.
AI tools are not allowed except for teaching purposes within a framework defined during the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Refer to CEFR level B1+/B2. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills corresponding to this level in a university context. In addition, they are expected to complete homework assignments, keep abreast of current events in the French language throughout the semester and do appropriate personal work outside of class.
In order to sit the final exams, students must not be absent from more than 3 sessions (without justification).
The total mark for the course is based on the preparation/participation/presentation mark, the grammar mark, the written production mark and the oral comprehension and production mark.
Absence from an examination must be justified by an official certificate.

To do this, we will work on authentic documents of all kinds, mainly from the media and literature, to expand vocabulary in a nuanced, idiomatic way that is adapted to the language register.
In written and oral production, we will practise producing narrative and argumentative texts (stories and debates).
The grammar programme covers the following points:
- Fundamental syntactic structures
- The noun: number and gender of common nouns, determiners, pronouns (personal pronouns in affirmative and negative sentences), place and agreement of adjectives.
- The verb : morphology, agreement of the past participle, alternation of past tenses (passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait), conditional and hypothetical sentences, most common uses of the subjunctive.
Grammar points will be dealt with inductively, using a corpus of examples to encourage metalinguistic reflection and the acquisition of grammatical terminology.
During this first language course of the curriculum, we will present various tools that are very useful for studying French at university: grammar books and dictionaries, websites, French-language media, etc.
