Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This optional lecture offers orientation for academic writing from the proseminar paper to the bachelor's or master's thesis. The aim of the course is to teach how to work properly and correctly with regard to academic standards.

This class is open to students of all romance languages and fields of studies (BA, MA, teacher training). It is not necessary to also frequent a linguistics class.

In the course, we will use practical examples from linguistics to deal with the scientific research process from the identification of the topic to the scientific output in the form of exposés, written theses and presentations. Furthermore, new forms of science presentation (e.g. science podcasts or Youtube channels) will be shown to demonstrate the significance of scientific results in today’s world.

We will cover the following topics:
• Finding academic resources (libraries, databases, etc) and critically evaluating it (citation worthiness of sources).
• defining research interest and research questions
• Presenting the state of research and specifying a topic based on initial reading
• Exposé: Do's and Dont's
• working with resources and applying them to your own topic
• Managing books, articles etc in databases
• “Translating” research questions into research design
• Applying linguistic methods quantitatively or qualitatively
• Evaluating data in relation to the research questions and presenting it
• Structuring your thesis work
• finding appropriate formulations
• citing and writing correctly (spelling and punctuation, gender-sensitive language)
• Do's and Dont's of scientific writing
• Tips and tricks for writing in the target language
• Critically editing your own work and present it in an attractive, reader-friendly layout
• Critically summarizing and reflecting on your work

The course is aimed at all students of Romance Studies (BA, MA, Lehramt) who would like to get to know or deepen their knowledge of scientific work or need tips and tricks for the writing process such as the Bachelor's or Master's thesis. After completing the course, you will have the skills to work independently on a (linguistic) scientific topic in accordance with academic quality criteria.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation and completion of some small work assignments are required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Regular attendance (on-campus or via video call with active camera) and active participation
• Completion of the work assignments

Examination topics

See "Minimum Requirements and Assessment Standards." There will be no oral or written examination.
