Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course I propose to students a theoretical and historical analysis of typologies of European colonialism and an analysis of the concept of the imaginary or representations of the imaginary. Addressing twentieth-century theories I will analyze how literature responded to colonial pressures and through which different representations of nations were constructed (Anderson). Also, analysis of the cultural micro-climate in Transylvania is representative of internal colonialism. By confronting theory with literary practices I will try to define the cultural and literary specificity of this "cluster". The analysis will highlight several current issues and relations: centre-margin, trans-pluri-inter-culturality, identity construction, national imaginary, ethical-ethnic-aesthetic in literature.

The objectives of the course will be:
-analysis of postcolonial discourse;
-to trace the history of successive colonizations in Transylvania;
-interpretation of representative texts for the representations of the colonial imaginary (19th and 20th centuries)
Authors proposed for analysis through text extracts:
I. Slavici, L. Rebreanu, I. Agârbiceanu, M. Banffy, A Meschendorfer etc.
The methods will focus on discursive analysis, literary hermeneutics, cultural analysis of texts, focusing on the interpretation of different genres of discourse.

The exam consists of two phases:
-writen report on a given subject: 50%
-oral examination/analysis of a text at first sight: 50%
