Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course first discusses the use of theory for decoding literatures in the broadest sense. The most common literary theories will then be presented along important tasks in literary studies and tested on short text samples, thus supplemented by an methodical approach. The run through literary theories includes hermeneutics, narratology, semiotics, structuralism and "metahistory". The question of (auto)biographical texts is also addressed. Later, the focus is on positions of discourse analysis, psychoanalysis, gender studies and postcolonial studies. The students learn which theories are suitable for which questions and receive a historical overwiew of the formation of theories in cultural studies.
The focus is - as far as possible - on theories from the Romance countries.

Assessment and permitted materials

If less than 55 % is achieved, no positive mark is possible.
