Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims at familiarising MEd students with research into literature in the EFL classroom, with a focus on both theoretical principles and research methods.
At the end of this term, students will have learnt to
• reflect on the role of literature in the EFL classroom
• generate research questions on this topic
• think carefully and critically about data and research designs
• evaluate quantitative and qualitative research methods and what they can tell us about readers, reading aims and reading materials

Assessment and permitted materials

You will be expected to
• develop a small research project in the course of this term, for which you will write two smaller and one longer assignment
• read chapters and articles or watch videos which will be posted on moodle in preparation for each class
• prepare small tasks like note-taking
• participate in discussions and your colleagues' research projects
• give (and receive) peer feedback on your colleagues' (and your own) projects

Presence and participation are mandatory. You can have two absences. Please make sure you bring yourselves up to date on tasks and readings and visit moodle regularly for that purpose.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade will consist of the following:
Participation, tasks and peer feedback: 20%
2 shorter assignments (500-1000 words each): 20% each
longer assignment of 3000-3300 words each: 40%
Four out of these five tasks have to be positive (51%). The overall pass grade is 60%.
Grading scale:
100-90 Sehr Gut
91-80 Gut
81-70 Befriedigend
71-60 Genügend
