Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed to offer an insight into how different research methods, approaches and tools can be used to investigate the role of individual differences in the learning of additional languages. The module aims to develop students’ ability to interpret, evaluate and apply methods for examining factors that can influence second language learning. In the module students will gain hands-on experience in collecting, transcribing, describing, coding, analyzing and discussing data, preparing students to carry out empirical investigations on second language motivation, language learning anxiety, emotions, engagement and self-regulation. Students will learn how to identify research problems and questions about individual differences in language learning, how to select appropriate methods of answering research questions, how to ensure the validity and reliability of research and to use a variety of tools for data collection and analysis. Specific research tools focused on will include questionnaires, interviews, and verbal protocols.

Participants will develop their ability to engage in academic discussions by participating in discussion and improve their critical thinking and writing skills by carrying out the course assignments. Students will also gain hands-on experience in second language acquisition research by conducting a small-scale group project and develop their presentation skills as part of the group presentation sessions.

Each theme will be introduced by short lectures and readings which will be followed by group discussion activities. Students will work in groups and carry out a small-scale research project and present it to the class in simulated conference sessions.

Assessment and permitted materials

In order to successfully complete the course, students have to do all of the following:
- Participate actively in class, i.e. regular attendance, completion of short in-class and homework assignments, active participation in discussions 20 points
-Complete two short methods assignment tasks during the course (max. 15 points per task, i.e. max. 30 points in total)
- Participate actively in the group project and presentation (max. 50 points in total)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is obligatory (max. 2 absences)
A maximum of 100 points can be achieved.

70 -79= Befriedigend
80 - 89= Gut
90-100 = Sehr gut

Examination topics

/ n.a.
There is no sit-down exam. As indicated above, understanding the rationale and the means of applying research methods, both independently and in connection with a larger research project, is shown through successful completion of tasks and the group project.
