Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is intended for students who want to develop basic competencies in teaching language to young learners. It will get participants into terms with principles, concepts and terminology of early EFL methodology by concentrating on the following central issues:

Theories of first and second language acquisition
Young learners and foreign language learning
General information on aspects of the primary school curriculum
Didactic principles in early language education
Autonomous learning: Learner's differences and teacher's roles
Basic models of teaching EFL to young learners
Topics: EAC and mini-CLIL
The Communicative Approach for primary students
Teaching listening and teaching speaking
Classroom management and classroom discourse
Lesson planning and lesson observation
Ready to use materials and tools such as games, songs, rhymes, etc

There will be opportunity for peer teaching and students will be expected to observe experienced teachers. Assessment will be mainly based on portfolios.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in class activities and discussions based on background reading and completion of a portfolio.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to help students to make use of their professional English in a young learner's language learning setting by familiarizing them with some basic issues of early ELT methodology.

Examination topics

Interactive class, peer teaching and peer observation, group work, role-play, presentation, simulation and discussion.
