Aims, contents and method of the course

: This lecture course will introduce students to the following topics:
- techniques and conventions of scholarly research, handbooks, the computer in English Studies
- literary theories, approaches, technical terms and their practical application
- major genres and modes of literature, methods of analysis
- literary history, periods of English literatures

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at helping students to become competent readers and critics by providing them with a critical toolkit which should enable them to understand and use basic concepts of literary criticism and, by applying these procedures, to approach and evaluate literary texts autonomously.

Examination topics

lecture; e-learning platform; preparation of texts at home will be expected; a tutorial will be available

a reader and reading list will be provided. Powerpoint-presentations used during the lecture can be downloaded from the eLearning platform.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will give an introduction to basic questions of literary studies, such as text analysis and literary interpretation, literary theory and literary history. It will also acquaint students with literary terminology and its practical application and give a survey of the major literary genres and the special problems relating to them.

A reader with will be available at the beginning of the semester. Obligatory reading: Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness. Additional reading: Michael Meyer, English and American Literatures (3. Aufl. 2008).
