Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture course will offer a selective discussion of anglophone Canadian fiction, which, since the 1970's, has been widely recognized (note the many international awards gained by Canadian authors), for its variety and artistic qualities. It will explore the gradual emergence of a national literature, distinct from its British and American models, and will consider the regional factors which have shaped the settings and the careers of the characters populating the fictional worlds. It will also examine the impact of the ethnic heritage on writings rooted in the various regions of Canada and abroad.
A provisional reading list will be posted which includes short stories and excerpts from fictional texts made accessible in a Reader., as well as a number of novels, either available as paperbacks at local bookstores or on the reserved shelf in the departmental library.
