Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The main focus of this course is interactional discourse analysis in the context of everyday conversation. Students will first be introduced to the subject matter of discourse analysis in Anglophone contexts, as well as to the concomitant methodologies of data elicitation and analysis. The particular focus will be on the investigation of conversational styles. The course culminates in students' own (mandatory) discourse analysis project for which they will record a conversation (in a cultural setting of their choice), and then transcribe, analyze, and interpret selected short excerpts. This project will be the basis for an oral presentation as well as the final write-up (Proseminararbeit).

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is based on class participation (particularly in discussions based on selected readings); homework assignments; as well as data collection and analysis, oral presentation, and final write-up of participants' own research projects.
