Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Jean Strouse argues that 'what we know of history has been shaped by the careers of famous men' in her discussion of biography as a masculine historiographic practice ('Semiprivate Lives' 113). This class centres on recent fictionalised biographies of women artists from various historical epochs (Artemisa Gentileschi, Clara Wieck Schumann, Frida Kahlo, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath). The fictionalised biography (biographical novel/drama/poem) is an interesting hybrid genre, placed somewhat uncomfortably between historiography and the art of fiction, which permits it to disregard certain expectations raised by so-called 'factual' biographies (e.g. that authors should strive for 'objectivity' or 'truthfulness'). The genre thus re-negotiates the relationship between fact and fiction, leaving the writer ample room to articulate feminist and other concerns.

There will be no classes in May. Instead, students are expected to present a paper of 10-12 minutes at a mini-conference on 12 June (10am-4pm). Participation in the mini-conference is obligatory!
