Reading list
Two books will be needed to accompany the semester plan: E.v. Gelderen "English syntax" 2003 (Amsterdam: Benjamins) and W. Abraham & Th. Janssen (eds.) 1989. "Tempus - Aspekt - Mood and Modality". Die lexikalischen und grammatischen Formen in den germanischen Sprachen." Tübingen: Niemeyer. Classes will have to be prepared for each session: We shall practice syntactic constituency (on the basis of van Gelderen). The TAM-book provides numerous detailed illustrations, and it will serve the purpose of preparing specific seminar talks. (Either book can be purchased from me at author's price - send me an E-mail to place a reservation: werner-abraham@t-online.de).
