Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar we will analyse four contemporary novels which are told from an unconventional point of view and/or by such unlikely narrators as god or death. In these texts the readers are confronted with crooked perspectives on the fictional world.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in discussions in class, final essay,
research paper (20-25 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Make students familiar with contemporary texts which are interesting in terms of narrative technique as well as thematic issues (historical and contemporaneous) and introduce them to a number of narratological concepts.

Examination topics

Introduction to the theory and analysis of fiction, contextualisation of novels; students's presentations, class discussions

Reading list

In this seminar we will analyse the following four novels: Charles Higson, 'Getting Rid of Mr. Kitchen', Frank Ronan, 'Dixie Chicken', Markus Zusak, 'The Book Thief', Patrick McGrath, 'Spider'.
3 texts are available at facultas on campus; as 'Dixie Chicken' is out of print a master-copy will be provided
