Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Despite, or maybe because of, its occupation with terror, violence, and the supernatural, Gothic fiction has managed to fascinate a large readership. This class will start with a discussion of what "the Gothic" is and will then concentrate on a close reading of a number of Gothic texts (poems, novels and short stories) from different periods of time. We will explore in how far the chosen Gothic texts were influenced by the cultural contexts in which they were produced and how the texts deal with such issues as race, class and gender.
