Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar, we will analyse well-known contemporary Australian novels, short stories, plays and an autobiography written by contemporary Australian writers. The course intends to give a broad introduction to the themes, techniques and styles employed by internationally renowned Australian authors. The texts selected will often, though by no means exclusively, focus on conflicts between the white settlers and the aboriginal inhabitants, but will also comprise formally interesting dramas and surreal short stories.
Assessment and permitted materials
Seminar paper (20-25 pp.), oral presentation; class participation; end test.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will become acquainted with recent trends in Australian literature and with some of Australia's best-known authors.
Examination topics
Interactive; critical readings of literary texts; oral presentations with subsequent discussion in class. Topics will be allotted during the first session on October 16; you should, however, think about two or three topics you might want to work on beforehand. For this reason, make sure that any mail sent to your University-email Address is forwarded to the email address you regularly check, so that we can contact you with course preliminaries and topics as soon as registration is over.
Reading list
Among the authors discussed will be David Malouf (Remembering Babylon), Gail Jones (Sorry), Peter Carey (short stories), Andrew Bovell (Speaking in Tongues, When the Rain Stops Falling) and the aboriginal writer Sally Morgan (My Place).
