Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims at preparing and supporting students in working on their master projects in the MEd programme. We will discuss practical questions surrounding the organisation and design of an MEd project, as well as relevant research methods. Specific focus will be given to the need for a coherent, theoretically well-founded design, which uses appropriate methods to answer research questions. Students can develop a project over the course of the semester or come prepared with a project idea.

Assessment and permitted materials

presentation of master project; written assignment (academic text of 800-1000 words) on a topic related to master project; participation in class discussions and preparations

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Course evaluation is based on:
(A) class participation and preparation of reading/other course materials (max 20 pts)
(B) project presentation (max. 20 pts)
(C) written assignment (max. 30 pts)
(D) peer feedback (30 pts)
The minimum requirements for passing the course are:
(a) regular class attendance (max. 1 missed session)
(b) active class participation
(c) giving project presentation on time
(d) handing in the written assignment (on time)
(d) giving peer feedback (on time)
(e) attaining the pass rate of 60 points
Grades:
Sehr gut (very good): 90-100
Gut (good): 80-89
Befriedigend (satisfactory): 70-79
Genügend (pass): 60-69
Nicht Genügend (fail): 0-59

Examination topics

A) Class Participation: Completion of required reading and short (online) tasks; engagement in class discussions, peer feedback to other students' projects
B) Presentation: Oral presentation of MEd thesis project (including content, methodology, envisaged analyses)
C) Written Assignment: Short literature review of a topic/concept relevant to (planned) MEd thesis (800-1000 words)
