Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

While travel literature was formerly situated on the fringes of literary studies, it has meanwhile come to be regarded as a particularly instructive cultural phenomenon because it reveals much about the perception and representation of other nations and their cultures and the function of traditional images and heterostereotypes which shape transborder interaction.
The texts chosen for this seminar reflect, on the one hand, the experience gained and the presuppositions involved in crossing the border between the United States and British North America/Canada (especially topics 1-4). They mirror, on the other hand, the encounter of North American travelers with European settings and cultures on transatlantic journeys, evincing different attitudes and relationships, which are partly shaped by traditional images of the imagined map of Europe.
