Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the context of our research project "Trauma, Memory, and Narrative", this seminar will analyse the relation of art and reality in 5 selected novels. The focus will be on the ways in which art becomes a mirror of contemporary social and political reality, on the transforming powers of the literary imagination, on the relation of trauma and art and its function with regard to sublimation and healing.

Assessment and permitted materials

class participation, oral presentation, essay (22-25 pages), and final written test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students become acquainted with contemporary South African literature, the political situation after the fall of apartheid, with modern trauma theory and the role of narration, with literary theories focussing on the relation of art and reality.

Examination topics

Oral presentations of selected novels and topics, with subsequent discussion in class. A list of four early topics will be available at the end of January on our notice board (1st floor). Students volunteering for these early topics should sign up and inform Dr. Dieter Fuchs about their choice by e-mail. They will be accepted automatically for this seminar.

The following novels will be discussed: Zakes Mda, The Madonna of the Excelsior (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2002); Susan Mann, One Tongue Singing (London: Vintage, 2005); Susan Mann, Quarter Tones (London: Harvill Secker, 2007); Joanne Fedler, The Dreamcloth (Johannesburg: Jacana, 2005); Damon Galgut, The Impostor (London: Penguin, 2008).
