Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course provides a survey of a number of different approaches to the learning/acquisition of a second language (innatist, cognitive, functional, socio-cultural, etc). In addition, students will be encouraged to reflect on the possible links between second language acquisition research and language pedagogy. Foundational, compulsory reading material will be provided, which covers key concepts and issues in SLA and language learning/teaching. Students will supplement this material with their own research on a particular paradigm. This will form the basis of a class presentation and discussion as well as a written assignment.
Assessment and permitted materials
Class presentation on a particular theory/approach to language learning; short summary and commentary of an article written from one of the theoretical perspectives covered in the course; course participation (class discussions, group work, assignments).
