Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture course offers a critical discussion of areas of linguistic theory and description especially from the point of view of their relevance for teacher education. The areas treated will include approaches to grammar, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, pragmatics, and topics from applied linguistics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective is to consolidate and extend students' knowledge of different approaches to linguistic description, and importantly, to encourage them to develop their own critical understanding of these, particularly as they relate to the study of Engish.

Examination topics

Lecture (team teaching), student participation in session and independent study between sessions.

Reading list

A Course Reader, consisting of key extracts from the relevant literature and a list of other core readings will be made available in one of the first sessions.
