Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey course of the histories and cultures of the United States will include an outline from colonial times to the present day. During the term, we will also heavily draw on cultural studies approaches to history, society, identity, nation and ideology. Topics will include immigration, ethnicity, Native Americans, religion in the US, founding myths and their persistence, hegemonic narratives and icons, popular music, counter cultures (New Hollywood, the Beats,...). We will examine a number of written and audio-(visual) documents which contributed to the shaping of American imagination(s).

Assessment and permitted materials

knowledge of the subject matter presented in the 13 lecture units; final written exam (90-minute written examination, tasks: short essay, answering of specific questions)
