Aims, contents and method of the course

"I know no other literature so closely linked to the immediate reality of politics" (Frank O'Connor on Irish Literature). -- This series of lectures will address a wide range of topics relating to Irish history, society and culture and will be structured around the following core subjects: Irish History (from mythological times to the present), 'The Troubles', The North, Celtic Tiger Ireland, The Languages of Ireland, Irish Cinema, Cultural Geography and Folklore, The Irish Diaspora, Images and Stereotypes of Irishness.

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements for credit: written final test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It is the aim of this lecture course to supply basic background information for the study of Irish literature and culture (what used to be known as 'Landeskunde') and to provide an introduction to the tools and methodologies of Irish Cultural Studies.

Examination topics

lecture course; classroom discourse will be supplemented by visual aids (excerpts from documentary and feature films).
