Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In order to allow readers access to a fictional world, they need to be given a certain amount of world-specific information and an emotional anchor point. With flash fiction, ultra-short poems, one-act plays, comic strips and short films, this seems a feat impossible to achieve. In this course we will adopt a broad approach embracing cognitive literary studies, reader-reception theory and narratology to analyse extreme textual brevity as a phenomenon which seems directly opposed to two of the basic preconditions of literature's manifold aims: reader involvement and the creation of consistent fictional worlds.
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment will be on the basis of active participation, an oral report and a short written summary.
