Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, we will "look at" pictures that are transferred into the words of literary texts. Our analysis of examples from different genres and periods will be motivated by questions such as: How do literary texts evoke images? What can images do that words cannot? For what purposes are images used in literary texts? What does that tell us about the visual culture(s) of the respective periods as well as our own? Contrasting literary texts with their medial 'Other' will also help us to get a better understanding about how literary texts work and how we can apply analytical tools to get the most out of them.

Assessment and permitted materials
