Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The first significant novelist (F.P. Grove/Greve) emerged from the Canadian West, and while often associated with pioneering literature, its writing, nevertheless, is marked by a continuous desire to experiment. It differs also from its American regional counterpart made famous by 'the six-gun mystique.' This course will begin by situating the Canadian Western in the larger frame of Canadian writing. It will then examine three aspects of its fiction which mark its ethnic diversity, namely, modernism (Sinclair Ross), postmodernism (Paulette Dubé), postcolonialism (Thomas King).
