Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar will concentrate on a selection of plays written before Shakespeare's time. The idea is to outline the history of drama from its beginnings, in form of the Easter trope, for example, via the medieval mystery and morality plays, the first comedies, up to the tragedies of Kyd and Marlowe.

Assessment and permitted materials

class participation, oral presentation, essay (10-12 pages) or final written examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students are to gain an overview of the history of British drama, its forms and contents, before Shakespeare.

Examination topics

Oral presentations of selected plays and topics with subsequent discussion in class

Reading list

A reader with older texts will be available at the beginning of the semester. The Spanish Tragedy, and Dr Faustus (all available in Pb.) should be bought.
