Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This workshop will explore the dramatic literature of the first two decades of the twentieth century and place it in the context of the theatrical landscape. Edwardian England was a time of reform and experiment; in terms of playwriting the so-called new drama, with its structural and thematic innovations, emerged, in terms of theatre the first repertory ventures were initiated. Presentations will deal with dramatic and theatrical aspects as well as with cultural and political contextualisation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in discussions in class, final essay.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Introduction to a comparatively neglected yet highly significant and fascinating corpus of works for the stage. The new dramatists and the champions of the repertory theatre paved the way for the development of modern drama and theatre in Britain.

Examination topics

Introduction to the theory and analysis of drama; contextualization of the plays; students' presentations, class discussions.

Reading list

A reader will be provided at the beginning of term; will include plays by John Galsworthy, St. John Hankin, Harley Granville Barker, Githa Sowerby and Elizabeth Baker.
