Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses students of English who are currently writing an M.A. or a Ph.D. thesis in the fields of English literature and/or cultural studies. It will afford students the opportunity to present their projects and discuss key issues or unsolved problems in class. We will be offering practical guidance for approaching a topic and composing a research paper. Moreover, the seminar is intended to advance students' knowledge of conventional and computer-based research methodologies, to alert them to the pitfalls of plagiarism and to familiarize them with the requirements of the final oral exam (Diplomprüfung) on the basis of examples from previous exams (topics and reading lists).

Assessment and permitted materials

presentation of project, summary of project (handout), regular attendance and active participation in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To offer advice and guidance for structuring a M.A./Ph.D. thesis; provide critical feedback on work in progress, advance methodological skills and prepare students for the 'mündliche Diplomprüfung'.

Examination topics

PPT presentations by students and lecturers; forum discussion; a concise summary of the individual research projects and/or a passage from the text(s) discussed should be distributed in class at least one week prior to presentation.
