Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar will deal with various aspects of sentence construction in English (= syntax). Topics will among others include
- the organisation of descriptive grammars and their theoretical background
- grammatical models and descriptive grammar
- the distinction between simple and complex sentences and the criteria on
which it is based
- the notion of "obligatory" vs. "optional" sentence constituents and
grammatical theory
- the basic structure of simple sentences
- valency and sentence structure
- subjectivalisation in English and German
- the relationship between finite and non-finite constructions (infinitives,
gerunds

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment will be based on an oral presentation in class and a seminar paper on the same topic.
