Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar will first discuss various approaches to discourse analysis which determine its relation to other linguistic disciplines dealing with (spoken and written) discourse, e.g. speech act theory, sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, etc. Next, some methodological and terminological issues will be clarified, e.g. the functions of language, the distinction between spoken and written language, the role of context in communication. Special emphasis will be put on the latest developments in the field, e.g. Critical Discourse Analysis. Finally, some types of discourse, e.g. spontaneous conversations, press language, political discourse, etc., will be analysed in terms of such notions as cohesion vs. coherence (concerning the grammaticality and acceptability of the discourse, respectively), discourse structure and discourse content, as well as information structure.
Assessment and permitted materials
Class participation; oral paper presentation; final written essay
