Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This introductory seminar will look at literary texts dealing with art and explore the ways in which art has inspired the literary imagination. Apart from discussing the concept of art and the artist reflected in a variety of genres from different periods of time this course will pay attention to the historical and cultural contexts in which these texts are embedded. Essays by influential art critics like John Ruskin as well as the discussion of topics like ekphrasis and the interface of verbal and visual modes of representation can further our understanding of the complex relationship of literature and art.

active class participation, assignments, short presentations, term paper, final written test
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students become familiar with critical approaches to literary texts. They are acquainted with basic skills and techniques required for writing an academic paper.
