Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

For the philosopher Hannah Arendt (1906 Hanover-1975 New York) understanding is "an unending activity by which, in constant change and variation, we come to terms with and reconcile ourselves to reality, that is, try to be at home in the world." In Arendt's case this kind of understanding and thinking takes place in two continents and two languages, spanning German and English, New York and Europa, the United States and Germany. At the same time it covers a considerable cultural gap.
This course is an introduction to Arendt's thought and intends to explore how far her thinking is still applicable and valid in today's world. Some of the main conceptual orientation points will be, for instance, narration, pariahs, antisemitism, judgement, refugees, the concept of evil, beginnings.
This course is a 'bridging seminar' and runs parallel to the German course "Zwischen den Sprachen: Hannah Arendt lesen" [Between languages: Reading Hannah Arendt]. Members of both courses will meet twice during the semester to discuss the concepts of thought they have worked on and the problems they encountered in Arendt's work.
