Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: The seminar will explore varieties of cross-cultural encounters and experiences of immigrants to England, America, Britain and other countries from within the English-Speaking World as presented on selected works of fiction by a wide variety of anglophone authors, written between the mid-20th and the present. The texts discussed deal with narratives of cross-cultural connection, collision, alienation from the immigrant's native roots, social isolation as well as re-assertion of ethnic and/or cultural difference. The texts include Colm Toibin's latest novel "Brooklyn" (2009) and several short stories e.g. by the Anglo-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie, the Anglo-Japanese author Kazuo Ishiguro, the American fiction writer T. C. Boyle, the Irish novelists Roddy Doyle and Eilis Ni Dhuibhne and the Iranian born British-Rhodesian Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing as well as narratives by Australian Aboriginal writers.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment: A seminar paper of 10.000 words in English must be handed in by each participant at the appointed date; it must be an authentic work by the participant himself (no group work!); PPT-presentation (individually or as a member of a team) of max. 20 minutes per speaker; regular attendance; active participation in discussions in class and a final essay. – The deadline for submitting the SE-paper is one week after the day of the presentation (unless otherwise stated). A feedback will be offered to each participant within two weeks after the paper has been handed in.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims: To develop students' cross-cultural understanding and awareness of cultural difference; to advance students' theoretical and practical competence in analysing and contextualizing works of fiction; to advance students' skills in writing research papers, to enhance MIT-based presentation and research skills; to improve the participants' oral and written English language proficiency.

Examination topics

Method: Research-based discussion class, employing interactive multi-media-based teaching combined with students' PPT presentations and forum discussions.

Reading list
