Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the first half of the semester students compile a portfolio consisting of 4 pieces of written work from their degree programme. The included texts:
- must be written in English
- must have been produced by the student as part of their degree programme
- must be the sole work of the student
- at least one text must have been produced under 'test conditions', i.e. under time constraints.

Additionally, the portfolio must include a 'reflective essay' (750-1,000 words) which will:
- describe the background / context of their chosen pieces
- explain how these pieces illustrate their own development as writers
- provide an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses as writers
- show how the pieces provide evidence to substantiate the claims made about students' writing
- demonstrate an ability to analyse texts

Following submission of the portfolio, students will participate in a viva (oral assessment) of approximately 15 minutes, which consists of 2 parts.
- In part one, students deliver a well-structured five-minute presentation of their portfolio, in which they justify the choice of texts and explain how they reflect their development as a writer.
- In part two, the raters ask questions relating to the presentation and the portfolio. The students respond by defending their decisions and elaborate on the points raised.

Assessment and permitted materials

Portfolio, viva (formal presentation, spoken interaction).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of the writing assessment is to assess candidates' ability to produce a wide range of written text types for different communicative purposes, which show a considerable capacity for reflection and analysis.
The portfolio should show that the candidates have:
- a command of written English corresponding to CEFR C1 or C2 level
- an ability to produce a variety of text types with a high degree of linguistic accuracy
- an awareness of typical conventions of different text types and the ability to produce texts which suit their intended purposes and make use of appropriate conventions
- an ability to reflect on their own writing and development as writers as well as an awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses as writers

The spoken part of ELLA assesses the candidates' language use in spoken production and interaction. More specifically, it assesses the following communicative competences and skills:
- control of segmental and suprasegmental features of English
- ability to apply lexical and grammatical characteristics of spoken English according to communicative purpose
- awareness of the interrelation between spoken production and context/communicative purpose, e.g. appropriate use of style and register according to situational needs
- fluency in speech and awareness of discourse management

Examination topics

- Portfolio briefing session (in the first week of the semester), in which the task and rationale are explained
- Independent study period (until mid-semester), in which students prepare their portfolios
- Submission of portfolios (mid-semester)
- Exam period: assessment of portfolio and viva (from mid to end of semester)
