Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course explores the specific nature of language use in a range of professional contexts, such as business, science, medicine, law, and various other academic, bureaucratic and technological settings. These will be examined through a variety of analytical approaches, including variation theory, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, text linguistics and genre studies, using examples from both present-day and historical varieties of professional discourse.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in classroom discussions, assignments, an oral presentation, an essay.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To familiarize students with discourse in the professions in a broad and multifaceted theoretical perspective, and to provide them with methodological tools to analyze professional discourse in various contexts.
Examination topics
Readings, tasks, discussion, student presentations, essay; MOODLE learning platform.
