Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course addresses the pivotal factors that influence foreign language learning in adult life within a formal learner setting, and resulting educational implications. We will explore and discuss the relevance and impact of the following parameters: psychological traits, cognitive and metacognitive dimensions, individual characteristics and subjective variables, neuroscientific considerations, age and learning aptitude, learner strategies and techniques, socio-political requirements (globalization, lifelong learning). Another key aspect is the role of the language teacher/instructor in adult education (advisor, coordinator, manager), his/her self-concept, and the importance of rapport. On the basis of relevant underlying concepts and the identification of specific learner requirements we will discuss a range of methodological approaches (e.g. chances and constraints of learner autonomy) and develop appropriate teaching/learning methods, techniques and tools.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular and active participation, portfolio, short presentations.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the course is twofold: first, to identify the potentials and dynamics of teacher/learner interaction in a formal adult classroom setting (and beyond) and second, to foster the development of a specific teacher profile.
Examination topics
Project work, readings, discussions, observation and teaching practice in educational institutions, oral presentations.
Reading list
Suggestions will be made in class.
