Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The attempt to explain what it means to be Australian requires that we keep in mind that the country's multicultural society is a recent development, which came into existence only after long and painful conflicts between Aboriginal people, non-white immigrants and a nation that pursued a 'white Australia' policy. This course will position Australian literature in its historical context and offer a brief overview of the lives of the early pastoralists; the consequences of Australia's roots as a penal settlement; the Australian gold rush; federation and the progressive struggle for emotional and political independence from the colonial motherland. We will also discuss different forms of cultural memory used in the portrayal of the conflict-ridden history of Australia's Aboriginal people.

Assessment: students will give a short oral presentation and submit an essay by the end of the semester.
