Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students on this course will explore how meaning can be encoded in and interpreted from images and other visual texts. This will include an introduction to various theoretical concepts associated with visual text analysis (particularly from the field of visual semiotics), and also detailed analysis of specific texts in their various contexts (e.g. news photographs, advertisements in magazine, political campaign posters, etc.).

Assessment and permitted materials

Class and e-learning participation; poster presentations; coursework assignments (in groups and individually).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At the end of the course, students should:
- Understand some of the ways in which meaning can be encoded in visual texts and be able to identify these through analysis
- Be familiar with key theoretical concepts and relevant methodologies relating to visual texts
- Have read and discussed various studies in the subject area

Examination topics

A typical class will consist of a short introduction to a topic by the lecturer, followed by small-group discussions of texts students have been asked to read in advance. Most classes will also include some practical tasks (e.g. text analysis) followed by group discussion. Students will be expected to prepare for each class, and may be asked to give a brief presentation about something they have read or about a task they have completed.

Reading list

The course text will be
Kress, Gunther & Van Leeuwen, Theo (2006) Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Design 2nd edn. London, Routledge.

Additional course reading will be provided in electronic form or made available for photocopying.
