Inhalt: Videogames are gaining socio-cultural significance and are becoming one of the most important media of expression of the 21st century. This class will introduce students to some core issues of videogame studies with a focus on tools for videogame analysis. It aims to convey an understanding for the budding field of game studies in general as well as for games as media, their specific characteristics and expressive means in particular. Core questions are: how do videogames convey meaning? How can we identify the specific learning potential of a videogame? How can games be used as conceptual and persuasive tools?Methoden: discourse oriented lecture, student game analysis, hands-on, low level design exercises (no previous game design knowledge necessary)Ziele: to enhance media literacy in regard to videogames, to provide tools for analyses, and to foster awareness for a quickly evolving field of research within cultural studies.

Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
The grade of the course will be determined by participation and in-class preparedness (30%), short paper (videogame analysis draft) (20%), final paper (50%).
