Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The focus of this course is initially on the evaluation and design of the main 'building blocks' out of which units of teaching materials are constructed, i.e., 'input' in the form of texts, and related learning activities. These will be looked at in turn in terms of each of the main areas of teaching they involve, viz: reading/listening, writing, speaking, vocabulary, grammar and communication 'tasks'. This will be followed by work involving the evaluation and design of overall units of teaching material. The last main block of work will be concerned with approaches to course-book evaluation. A number of 'cross-cutting' issues will also be discussed in the course of dealing with these topics, e.g., 'authenticity', socio-cultural content, the role of the course-book, and so on.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Participation in class and group discussions and presentations.
2. Brief overview of theorising/research concerning an area of teaching, and evaluation and adaptation of a section of related published teaching material.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to function effectively, teaching materials need to be able to fulfill a variety of pedagogic roles. This course is concerned with attempting to identify these factors and increase practical understanding about how materials can be evaluated and designed accordingly.

Examination topics

Some limited formal input, plus as much hands-on teaching materials analysis and design work as possible, involving group work, presentations and discussions. Learning platform: MOODLE.
