Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses both methodological and descriptive problems pertaining to the analysis of texts. First, the origin of the discipline will be tackled on the basis of the interrelationships between text linguistics and the neighbouring fields of stylistics, discourse analysis, etc. A discussion of a few approaches to text linguistics will open the way to the presentation of the potential "standards of textuality" and the relevant analytical tools, e.g. the notion of orality. The data-driven part of the seminar will focus on different aspects of the analysis of texts, e.g. spoken discourse vs. written language, various types of argumentation, the analysis of the language of the media, political language, literary studies, etc. Some specific genres might also be included (legal language, recipes, or medical texts). Finally, the projection into the future of text linguistics will point to various orientations and tendencies in the field, which differ markedly in Europe as opposed to the USA.
