Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an introduction to theories of sound change, beginning with an overview of the history of the field and of the past disputes over its fundamental principles (such as the Neogrammarian assumption of regularity). Further discussion will cover such topics as the classification of sound changes, their naturalness, questions of directionality and reversibility, and the interaction of phonetic change with the phonological and morphological systems of a language. The final part of the course will be devoted to studies of sound change in progress (in real or apparent time) and the mechanisms of its initiation and propagation in speech communities. Throughout the course, the focus will be on English and its varieties. Students will be invited to prepare individual oral presentation on selected topics.
