Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Commander James Bond was born in the early 1950s and is still going strong in the 21st century. "James Bond" has become a popular cultural icon and has acquired many meanings depending on perspective, time and context. From the early days in the late 1950s and early 1960s Bond has also been an academic topic and has since then been analysed utilising a variety of approaches and methodologies. We will read articles or sections from books with a focus on the analysis of Bond the movies. You are expected to base the topics for your presentations/papers on the films and you need to build your arguments on close readings (mise-en-scene analysis or shot-by-shot analysis) of the filmic examples chosen.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, participation in class discussions of set readings, oral presentation, final written essay; research paper of 20 (minimum) to 25 pages (maximum) should you need full credit as a seminar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This class will provide you with a versatile toolkit to integrate the analysis of cultural icons and the analysis of film into your study projects.

Examination topics

Small-group and all-class discussions of regular set readings, a paper presentation (seminar conference format on a Friday afternoon and Saturday, attendance obligatory)
