Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of this course is to engage with and navigate the current 'cognitive turn' in the study of language under a variety of aspects and from various perspectives. Topics will be drawn from (but are not limited to) the traditions of cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics and the sociology of language, neurolinguistics, and the currently evolving field of 'cognitive sociolinguistics'.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation (including reading responses and discussion), in-class presentations, assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of this class is to gain access and insight into, and thus be able to critically engage with, the historical development, state-of-the-art methodologies, current findings, and overarching implications of cognitive research in linguistics as an important, evolving strand in the discipline.

Examination topics

Reading-based discussion, including in-class discussion led by students based on topical presentations.
