Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As an introduction to the ethnography of communication, this course examines cultural variation in communicative practices across a number of different languages and contexts, that is, the different uses which can be made of verbal and non-verbal semiotic resources to represent and communicate thoughts, attitudes and values and to express identities. Students will first be introduced to certain concepts such as 'communicative situation', 'culture' and 'identity' before moving on to discuss variation in the categorisation and realisation of speech acts such as greeting, complimenting or requesting; turn-taking and address systems; cultural markers; intertextuality; the negotiation of roles and identities; kinesics (gesture, facial expression); intercultural communication and pragmatic failure (misunderstandings).

Assessment and permitted materials

i) an essay to be handed in in January (about 6,000 words) and (ii) a classroom task, details of which will be provided during the first session

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in this seminar should help sensitize language students to the nature and scope of intercultural variation in communicative behaviour and to their own personal and cultural communicative styles.

Examination topics

After several introductory sessions, the seminar will consist largely of the presentation and analysis of numerous examples, including those provided by the students themselves.

Reading list

Students should prepare for the seminar by reading at least Chapters &, 2 and 4 of Muriel Saville-Troike The Ethnography of Communication : An Introduction (Third Edition, 2002. Oxford: Blackwell). Books available at FACULTAS bookshop.
