Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, we will look at examples of English which for one reason or another do not conform to the conventions of Standard English. We will enquire into what these reasons for non-conformity might be, and in so doing raise awareness of the nature of linguistic norms in general and their justification, as well as what motivates both conformity and non-conformity to them. We will be dealing with such concepts as authentitcity, standards, creativity and correctness, and how these are related.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will be assessed on the basis of oral presentations, active participation in discussions and written research papers. All presentations will take place during a seminar conference on Friday Dec 12th afternoon, and all day Saturday Dec 13th, concurrently with Prof. Reichl's and Prof. Ritt's seminar. Full participation in the conference is mandatory, so please bear this in mind when registering for the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of this course is to familiarize participants with the theoretical background, particularly as concerns the current interest in non-conformist ways of using English, especially verbal art, learner language, and English as a lingua franca. Students will be guided to identify and analyze relevant texts.

Examination topics

In an introductory phase, the agenda of the seminar will be presented and discussed, and participants will develop their research questions. Participants will be given guidance in choosing and analysing texts which are relevant to the theme of the seminar and will be required to present their ideas and findings both during the weekly sessions as well as at the seminar conference.

Reading list

A short reading list will be made available to registered participants to help preparation for the first few sessions in the winter term.
