Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar we shall learn how to use electronic corpora for gaining information about Middle English, i.e. the language that was used in England between 1066 and 1500. In the first few sessions, a quick introduction to ME grammar will be given and a few ME texts will be read in class. During the rest of the course, students will carry out and present reserach projects on lexical, morphological, and syntactic properties of Middle English.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will be assessed on the basis of classroom participation, a short project outline, a bibliography, the oral presentation of their research project as well as a written seminar paper in which they report on their projects.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Our goal is twofold. On the one hand, we shall learn how to deal with texts in pre-Modern variety of English and to understand the basic characteristics of that variety. On the other hand, we shall learn how electronic corpora and search programmes can be used to decribe the properties of a language and to discover trends in the way it changes.
Examination topics
A mini crash course in Middle English will involve classical frontal teaching and classroom reading. For the most part, the course will focus on students' research projects, for whose design and devlopment they will receive advice and feedback both from the convenor of the seminar and their peers.
